Words can not fully describe what this day means for one New Haven County family. The foster family adopted a little girl today, all made possible under our state's Safe Haven law .

And it was a rare treat that cameras were allowed in court as the adoption was made official.

A splashy arrival for nine-month-old Nicole as she was flashing a smile for all to see.

After caring for children in their home, Nick and Silvia are adopting Nicole, their first child in 18 years of marriage.

And you bet they want everyone to know about it.

"She's changed my life totally, she gives me a reason to work harder at what I do and makes it full for me to come home and have her waiting to jump all over me," Nick said.

"She is a miracle, my life," Silvia said.

Nicole was left at a hospital back in February, presumably by the woman who gave birth to her, under the protection of Connecticut's Safe Haven law.

This was a decision that Nicole's new family says is a blessing.

"If you don't want the child, don't be afraid to step forward. There are families out there who need children, that want children," Nick said.

Usually, cameras are not allowed at adoption proceedings but this is National Adoption Month and the family is raising awareness about the importance of foster care adoption.

"Don't be afraid, there are alot of kids out there who need a home, need love and if you have that home and love to give them, by all means go for it," Nick said.

Couples like Nick and Silvia can happily experience the challenges and rewards of being the parents they want to be through adoption.

Nicole is the eighth baby left at a hospital under the Safe Haven law which took effect in our state in 2000.

It allows new moms to leave their babies no more than thirty days old at emergency departments with no questions asked.
