Apartments evacuated during flash flood

NAUGATUCK, Conn. (WTNH) -- Two apartment buildings in Naugatuck were evacuated Wednesday afternoon following some flash flooding.

One of the buildings is located on Prospect St., while the other is located at 55 Trowbridge Place.

Both buildings have basement apartments. At this time it is unknown if all residents are being evacuated or just the lower units.

"Everybody in the first floor and basement apartments has nothing," said Ann Kuhar, "and it's ridiculous. There's got to be a way to fix it."

A temporary shelter is open at the Naugatuck Senior Center on Meadow St.

The water was so quick and strong Wednesday that it buckled roads, and washed away hillsides leaving one truck dangling over the edge.

Flood waters also made it into the basement of St. Francis Church on Church St. and lifted multiple oil tanks.

Officials said the line of the oil tanks broke and fuel oil began leaking into the basement.

DEEP is on the scene after approximately 150 to 200 gallons leaked into the basement.

The church has hired a contractor to remove all the oil from the tanks. The oil is not expected to get out of the basement or cause any environmental damage.

Governor Malloy says not only will clean up and recovery start Thursday, but that people will be out looking at the structural integrity of damns and bridges. He says the smaller bridges that were washed over were the ones of main concern.
