(WTNH) - You might start thinking twice about your updates on social networking web sites.

PleaseRobMe.com is a web site that quickly gets your attention. It's a collection of location-based status updates from sites like Twitter and Foresquare.

PleaseRobMe.com says they're not endorsing crime, but rather, they're trying to make a point that you've got to protect your privacy.

"It can be very dangerous if you choose to say a very consistent pattern of, 'I'm going from here, to here, to here,'" said Bobby Emamian, Prolific Interactive.

Emamian says, used correctly, the pros outweigh the cons. It's what he and Dan Healy, new media manager for Mason, a PR firm in Bethany, try to teach their clients. How build your brand and use social networking to lead to productive face-to-face interactions.

"You do want people to know you're at a 'Young Pros' event in New Haven and you want to see else is there, then you can find out more information about them from your phone, based on what they've said, and you can start a conversation," said Healy.

The key is control. You control the amount of information that's out there. Whether you're telling people where you're not, potentially inviting burglars, or where you are, potentially inviting stalkers.

Giulia Gouge runs the communications consulting site SheSoSocial.com

"The community that you're in, you're walking down the street in that community. Who's around, who your friends are, and who the lurkers in the bushes," she said.

One more thing to keep in mind, this stuff is ever-changing. So as fast as the next big thing is, someone's likely trying figure out how to take advantage of it.

"It's still very immature, this whole field, and we're gonna see a lot more cons come up," said Healy.

Another reason to stay in control of the information you share.
