NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Immediately following last week's Newtown tragedy, Yale-New Haven Hospital and the New Haven Police Department organized a gun buyback. One of the weapons recovered Saturday was a Bushmaster.
The Bushmaster is the same weapon the Sandy Hook shooter used to take 27 lives, including his mother.
This was the second gun buyback in just a few weeks. Within 90 minutes they already surpassed the number of guns collected last time around, 33. Yale-New Haven Hospital donated several thousand dollars to purchase gift cards to hand out to anyone who turned over a gun.
"Even if you get one off the street it's one less that has potential to get in the wrong hands, whether it's accidental or non-accidental," said Pina Violano, YNHH injury prevention coordinator. "For us, every gun counts and we don't care what kind of gun it is. We want them all."
If you couldn't make it to today's buyback, another one is scheduled next Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 710 Sherman Parkway in New Haven. Just bring the guns in a clear bag.
People will get a $50 gift card for any gun and an extra $50 for an assault weapon. There are no questions asked.
