East Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - Hundreds of people have 'liked' a social media campaign calling for the resignation of East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo following his now infamous "taco" comment.
Maturo said he will not quit.
A group of East Haven residents has started a Facebook page called ' East Haven Taxpayers Calling for Mayor Maturo to Resign .' The page was started Wednesday, and as of 6:00 a.m. Thursday had more than 480 'likes.'
There's also a page ' East Haven Taxpayers Supporting Mayor Maturo ', which has significantly fewer 'likes', and an open group on Facebook calling for a recall of Maturo .
Maturo became a lightning rod for criticism when he said he "might eat tacos" in response to a reporter's question about what he would do for the Latino community following the arrest of four police officers.
Maturo did apologize for his taco comment Wednesday. In a statement sent and later read to News 8, the mayor said "my sincerest apologies go out to the East Haven community, in particular the Latino community, for the insensitive and off color comment that I made."
East Haven's Democratic Party is asking Maturo, a Republican, to step down. Also, the Hartford Courant printed an editorial calling for the mayor's resignation.
Governor Dannel Malloy called Maturo's statement "repugnant".
Meanwhile, the Reform Immigration for America group will be sending more than 2,000 tacos to the mayor today. The group had its followers on Twitter and friends on Facebook text the word Taco to a number to pay for the tacos, and they got a huge response. They say this is the first wave of tacos being sent.
