New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - A SUV crashed into a house in New Haven early this morning following a police pursuit from Hamden.

It happened at Winchester Ave and Webster St. around 1:00 am.  The vehicle went all the way through the wall, trapping a man living there in his bedroom under the vehicle.

The pursuit began when the BMW SUV would not stop for a motor vehicle violation, police said. The driver kept going, even after the tires were hit with stop-sticks, but then crashed into the home.

The driver took off. He hasn't been found yet.

The man living in the home, identified as 34-year-old Michael Sweat, was freed and taken to the hospital.

"You see all the cops and the firefighters working frantically to get him out," said Ed Waters of New Haven.

New Haven police officer  David Hartman says Sweat suffered second- and third-degree burns to his buttocks and lower extremities, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Officials are shoring up the house to make sure it is safe.

New Haven and state police remain on the scene investigating.
