HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A car went into Hamden's Lake Whitney at Mather & Waite Streets early Friday, but the driver was not hurt.

20-year-old Jeremi Stogniew was driving east on Mather Street around 5 a.m. when his car slid on the wet pavement, crashed through a guardrail and drove into Lake Whitney.

Stogniew was able to escape through a broken window. He was not injured.

Mather Street at Dixwell Avenue and at the intersection of Waite was closed as police pulled the car out of the water. For a time only one wheel and a little bit of the body was visible.

Stogniew was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.
