Cat heads leave a community disgusted

OXFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Area residents have found a second severed cat head and they want whoever is responsible to pay the price.

The thought of anyone hurting one of her four dogs or four cats is something 14 year-old Abbie Dembek likes to block out of her head.

"I'd cry for hours and days," Dembek said.

Now, she's been thinking non-stop about it after her mother saw a severed cat head on Saturday as they were driving down Rolling Hills Road, around the corner from their Moose Hill Road home.

"That's really cruel and inhumane," Dembek said, "and I just feel bad for whoever's cat it is."

This is not the first sighting either. A former neighbor and friend saw the same thing about seven months ago in the same neighborhood.

That's why Abbie's mother didn't tell her what she saw this time, until it was confirmed.

"My neighbor called the police and the animal control came out and took pictures and took the cat head," Dembek explained.

That neighbor is a vet technician who was disgusted at what she saw.

Animal control officer Sandy Merry says it doesn't look like this was an accident.

"A fox will kill the cat and eat it, but then they go off and leave," said Merry, "but we just don't know. It doesn't look like an animal, but we just don't know yet.

The entire neighborhood is traumatized by these sightings. In fact, the vet technician who wants to remain anonymous tells me she's so upset, she buried that cat's head in her backyard.

"It makes me sad," said Dembek.

"We want to know what happened," said Merry, "if somebody did it, we want to know who it is."

"My sister said whoever's doing this should get their head cut off," said Dembek. "Yeah, that's terrible. There's no reason for it."

Anyone with information on the incident(s) is being asked to contact Animal Control or local police.
