OXFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — From dogs to chickens, even a donkey and horse. The state has seized 41 animals from an Oxford woman.
They say the animals are neglected and malnourished, and in serious need of veterinary care.
"That's a farm, that's something that really takes a commitment," said Oxford First Selectman George Temple.
Eighteen chickens, six turkeys, six guinea fowl, a goat, pig, donkey, three horses, four dogs, and a cat were taken.
Court documents say the animals lacked veterinary care, proper feed, and water.
"I'm an animal lover and you hate to see that kind of a thing," said Temple.
First Selectman Temple says they have zoning laws for animals, but in their rural community, their interpretation is loose.
"If you're unable to care for the animal eventually we find out and they find themselves in this position these people are in right now," Temple said.
He says the Department of Agriculture and the local animal warden monitored the situation since summer. He says in cases like these often times the owner's heart is in the right place.
"You don't have that many animals if you hate them, you know," said Temple. "Sometimes it sneaks up on people and they get a little overwhelmed."
Now, the 41 animals are in state care, some are in a rehabilitation facility, getting help.
"I think it's a relief for everybody who loves animals, you know it's good," said Temple. "We have these animals, they're safe."
