BRANFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A toddler died after falling off a piece of construction equipment in Branford Monday.

According to police, the two and a half year old boy was with his grandfather on their own property, in the area of 172 Laurel Hill Rd., when he fell.

The boy was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital's pediatric center for treatment to his head and face. Police say he died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Chief Kevin Halloran said that the accident scene was very emotionally charged when units arrived.

"When these types of calls for service occur, emotions run high not only for the family, but for first responders who attempt to provide the very best care and subsequent investigation for their loved one." said Chief Halloran.

Police say this is an ongoing investigation.
