Wallingford police have been working hard to find those responsible for several vehicle break-ins and it looks like that hard work is starting to pay off.

There are two suspects accused of breaking into a car at the Community Lake Parking lot in Wallingford. A women's purse was stolen and other items ripped off from her vehicle. Recently two people were seen trying to break into cars on Sigwin Circle. Now, Jean Kohan keeps everything locked up tight.

"It's to bad that people can't keep their hands off other people's possesions," she said.

Since last Spring, Wallingford and neighboring communities have seen an increase in vehicle break-ins; burglars looking for pricey electronic equiptment and wallets and pocketbooks all left in the open. Sometimes windows are smashed; other times people leave their car doors unlocked.

"I think with the economic times we are having right now it's an easy way to get into somebody's vehicle; get expensive electronic equiptmeny, checkbooks, ID and and use [it] for other purposes," said Lt. Marc Mikulski of the Wallingford Police Department.

Wallingford has made a half dozen arrests and is working on identifying others. They remind people not to leave their valuable belongings exposed in plain view or out on the seat. They also encourage you to always lock your car doors. And in neighborhoods and public parking lots, report any suspicious behavior.

These are precautions Kohan already takes.

"You never know who is going to walk in," she said.

Anyone who may see anything suspicious or may have information on these break-ins is asked to contact the Wallingford Police Department at (203) 294-2800.
