WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Officials from the West Haven fire department and DEEP responded to the head of the West Haven River after getting reports of a black sheen on the water.
A woman walking her dog spotted the sheen in the water and called the fire department. Fire officials said it could be creosote, a substance that used to be coated on old pylons.
Construction crews at a nearby site were removing the old pylons to build a new sea wall as part of a redevelopment project in the area.
"We can't really say whether it was coming from there or not," said Deputy Fire Chief Scott Schwartz. "They are going to reinforce their booms that they have set up over there on the water, so there's no actual leak there or anything, it's just normal stir up from the water itself."
Fire officials said the situation was under control and that an extra floating boom was placed in the water as a precautionary measure to prevent the creosote from spreading. None of the sheen got out to the main part of the river.
