East Haven seeks new police chief

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — East Haven is launching a search for a new chief to lead its troubled police department.

Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. says the search will be conducted with input from the U.S. Justice Department, which found last year that the department had engaged in a pattern of discrimination against Latino residents.

Former Chief Leonard Gallo announced his retirement in January following the arrest of four officers on federal charges including deprivation of rights and obstruction of justice.

Maturo said Thursday the public will have several opportunities to be involved in the search he hopes will draw candidates from around the country.

The search is to be conducted by a Massachusetts-based firm, Strategic Policy Partnership Consultant Services.
