EH PD has no confidence in mayor

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) - East Haven Police officers voted that they have no confidence in the leadership of the town's mayor, April Capone just weeks before election.

The result of the vote came in from acting Police Chief Guytano Nappi, and the town's board of police commissioners. An overwhelming margin of 42 to two shows that there is a lack of confidence in Capone's leadership capabilities.

"The top three problems are very simple, there's no leadership, there's no focus, and there's no support," said Richard Gudis, Union Attorney.

The Mayor calls the no-confidence vote political because it came about just weeks before election day.

"Four years ago there was a no confidence vote against the then mayor, the chief of police, and then board of police commissioners," said Capone. "I think its a pattern, same time, so I think its a pattern of certain members of this union trying to effect elections in East Haven."

The Police Department and Union Attorney said it's not a pattern.

"The reason for the no confidence vote, I've heard back and forth, its not political," said Gudis.

Capone said she is not phased by the no-confidence vote.

The police department said that while they are dealing with the unwanted spotlight, public safety is still a number one priority.

 For the past two years, the East Haven Police Department has been the subject of a FBI investigation about allegations of anti-latino racial profiling.  According to published reports, a federal grand jury has issued about 30 subpoenas to members of the department as part of the probe. The no-confidence vote has put the focus back on the department.
