NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- For two days a lot of people in a senior living complex have felt trapped in their apartments. They can't get out because neither of their elevators are working.
"I had to come down the steps, the stairway, three floors," said Effie Chambers, River Run resident.
"People upstairs they can't come down," one person said.
"No elevators," said Helen.
That's the buzz at River Run Housing, an independent senior living complex on Grand Ave. in New Haven.
People like Helen Graham who can't breathe well and have a walker are really upset.
"What am I supposed to do? Fly," asked Graham.
The elevator to the right has a sign saying it's out of service during construction. News 8 is told that sign was put up a few weeks ago. However, another elevator is now broken. Graham and others tell us it's been out of service for two days.
"Are you going out of your mind," asked News 8's Erin Logan.
"I'm going out of my mind," replied Graham.
"What are they saying here, the management," asked Logan.
"They don't say anything," said Graham.
Management wouldn't speak with News 8 either.
"Unfortunately, we can't comment on that."
"Do you have a private company that comes here and fixes things," asked Logan.
"I can't comment on that."
"It's a lot going up them stairs," said Yvette Graveline.
Graham's daughter Yvette Graveline doesn't want to leave her alone.
"It's more of a safety hazard," Graveline said, "they're trapped in here."
Graveline was tired of not getting updates from management, so she walked in and asked.
Here's what they told her:
"They're just waiting for a part. They came yesterday, she said."
She's questioning why there are painters on site working hard, but there is no sense of urgency about the elevator.
"Is that acceptable," asked Logan.
"I don't think so," Graveline said. "I mean God forbid something happens."
"I'll probably get kicked out, but something's got to get done," Graham said.
Management told Graveline that the elevator should be fixed by the end of the day. They told News 8 the same when we called back.
