NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A place many kids in New Haven call home is getting a big boost.

The Farnam Neighborhood house is undergoing a 1 million dollar renovation.

Today officials broke ground on the project that will include repairs and upgrades to the Farnam House.

It offers tutoring, recreational activities and parental support for families in the Elm City.

Organizers say they've been waiting for this project for a long time.

"It's just an exciting day. We're so happy to be here, sharing this event with so many friends and well wishers," Liz Gambardella, the Executive Director of the Farnam Neighborhood House, said.

"This is a very special day, especially for the kids and that's what it's all about," Geary Claxton of New Haven said.

The project is being funded by the state bonding commission and with the help of several grants.
