New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) -- Thursday marked National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day and local business owners were excited to join in the cheesy celebrations.
"It's been a tradition for long years," said Alex Al Sankary from Chap's Grille. "People love grilled cheese."
Grilled cheese is always on the menu at Chap's Grille on Chapel Street and it's practically the only thing available at the Cheese Truck.
"Everybody loves grilled cheese. Everybody's had grilled cheese for their whole life and it's comfort food," said Jeff Weaver from Caseus Cheese Truck
The Omni Hotel celebrated by giving everyone on staff a free grilled cheese from the truck.
"Crispy, melty cheesy... what else do you want out of life," Weaver asked.
Even if the sandwiches get a little fancier than what mom used to make, they are still at heart the ultimate comfort food. But what about your heart? It's not like grilled cheese is exactly health food.
Leave it to Claire's Corner Copia to come up with a special for grilled cheese day that actually has some nutritional value.
"We are doing a harissa organic pepper and cheese grilled cheese with avocado," said Claire Criscuolo. "And in this case, roasted organic bell peppers are loaded with vitamin C, they're rich in fiber, they're loaded with antioxidants and they're organic."
