Conn. tops California in gas prices

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Gas prices are averaging about $4 a gallon here in Connecticut, just in time for Labor Day weekend.

AAA says Connecticut has surpassed California as the highest gas prices in the country.

"We have to get together and do something about that then," said Russell Riambolt.

However it looks like stations in New Haven are holding steady at $3.99 a gallon for cash regular unleaded. That's still 18 cents more than a month ago and 11 cents more than a year ago.

"I mean I don't have any choice," Jane Alden said. "I still have to drive, so that's the problem. I have to try and economize in other ways."

Analysts are saying the strength of Isaac could determine if there are refinery outages, which would reduce the gas supply and eventually increase the price.

Connecticut drivers blame the 48 cent state tax per gallon for putting prices over those on the west coast.

"Connecticut has a lot of taxes that are associated with roads and improvements and whatnot, you've got to balance what you pay for," said David Budries.

Of course, the new $4 a gallon mark comes just before Labor Day, when many take their last summer getaway.
