Derby, Conn (WTNH) - A landmark building in Derby is getting the attention of a popular television show.
There's lots of excitement outside the old Sterling Opera House in Derby. Inside a film crew with the TV show Ghost Hunters is investigating the claims that ghosts walk the halls of the old building.
The show's visit was supposed to be a secret, but in a small town this is big news, and a visit by a national show is attracting lots of attention.
The camera crews are ready to capture what people in Derby have been saying for years. Someone or something appears to be using the old building, even though it's been vacant for over 40 years.
"Derby's Sterling Opera House was built in 1889. Over the years it has had lots of uses, including a city hall, police station, and a jail. The building has been undergoing renovations, and those who have been inside say they've seen things they can't quite explain," said Amy Bruni, a member of the Ghost Hunters team.
Dan Rivera, a paranormal expert, has gone through the building. He says judge for yourself. There are stories of mist in the balcony, possibly a woman, or a hand print in the dust of a chair made by a child spirit. And then there's the noise of a voice saying "help me".
"That's the voice of a child saying 'help me'. I'm not so sure it's haunted, but there's certainly a lot of activity in here," Rivera said.
The Segment for Ghost Hunters is set to air at the end of April or early May.
Whether this building is really haunted or not, it's great exposure for Derby. They've been working on raising money to reopen the building as a performing arts venue.
