NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police in New Haven are participating in a gun buyback event.
The event is sponsored by the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of New Haven and Worchester. It is part of a larger movement for gun safety and injury prevention. The goal is to get guns off the streets.
This year's event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1st, at the New Haven Police Academy, located at 710 Sherman Parkway.
A "no questions asked" policy will be in effect, allowing individuals to anonymously dispose of firearms without the fear of charges.
Amnesty for possession of a firearm without a permit is granted for those who turn in a firearm or ammunition at the time they walk into the gun buyback facilities. It is not granted for the time prior to walking into the facility or after leaving the facility.
In order to receive amnesty for illegal possession at the time you turn in the weapon, you must follow the protocol:
1) Firearms must be delivered unloaded.
2) Firearms must be put in a clear plastic bag and put into another container.
3) If dropping off ammunition in addition to a firearm, ammunition must be delivered in a separate bag.
4) If transporting the firearm by car, the firearm must be transported in the trunk.
5) After the firearm is screened by officers and determined to be working, a $50 gift card will be given.
6) An additional $50 gift card will be exchanged for firearms identified as assault weapons and/or saw-off shotguns.
7) Non-operational guns, antique firearms, BB guns and holsters will be accepted, but do not qualify for a gift card.
