Kids face dangers as they walk to school

In 2010, nearly 500 kids were hurt on the streets

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Walking to school is probably something you or your children have done at one time or another, but it can be very dangerous.

In 2010, nearly 500 children were injured while walking along Connecticut streets.

Small sneakers cross big roads every weekday in every school district in the state.

In New Haven, 6-year-old Anthony Taylor of Waxler-Grant Community School recites the rules of the road.

"You look both ways or wait for your mom or dad," said Anthony.

He was with his mom, teachers, and other 1st and 2nd Graders from Wexler-Grant Community School, participating in Safe Kids Walk This Way.

"They get to see and experience it early in the life, so it's a good thing," said India Taylor, Anthony's mother.

Pedestrian safety is a certainly a big issue. Director of Safe Kids Connecticut, Karen Gallo, says kids are more likely to jaywalk if they see mom and dad do it.

Also, one holiday coming up can pose a real scare.

"Obviously, more kids are injured as pedestrians before and after school hours," said Gallo. "Halloween is the most dangerous day of the year as pedestrians."

Big tractor trailers were even set up to give kids an idea of what truckers can see on the road.

"We really want parents to become involved in pedestrian safety," said Gallo, "and teach their kids how to be safe."

"I say, 'you see the hand? That means stop' and when the little man comes on, it means walk," explained Graciella Perez, a Wexler-Grant parent. "I try to teach them so they learn."

Some good lessons like these can help prevent any cars and kids from colliding in the future.
