(WTNH) - The howling winds, and bitter cold, is making it hard on those whose jobs force them to be outside. But other people still find time to play.

The wind was up to 35 miles per hour on Tuesday. And, Lars Vestergaard, a wind-surfer, was taking full advantage.

"It's an addiction," he said.

Oh, and did we mention that the windchill was -5?

So, News Channel 8's Gil Simmons went out to ask him about his wind surfing experience.

Simmons: "What's the draw on a day like today when most people say let me get inside?"
Vestergaard: "The wind."

Vestergaard braved the wind and coldest temps of the season for a little wind surfing fun. For others, it's not about play, it's about working for the pay.

Frank Spargo is a construction worker at 360 State Street and wasn't so enthusiastic about the temps. "Its bone chilling cold," he said.

Try working up there where the wind really howls!

"It's tough. The wind is really blowing today. Windchill has to be 5 or around that. We're makin' it," he said.

Even on ground level, staying warm is all about what you're wearing -- working or just walking.

Simmons: "You have alot of layers on?"
Muhammaed Encur, a pedestrian: "Yes, yes. I have two or three. It's very thick and kind of warm that way."

"Mind over matter. That's it. And thinking forward. There will be an end to it. Stay warm and dress warm," said John Palmer, a New Haven Police Officer.
