Mayors discuss postponed trick-or-treating

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Halloween usually comes once a year, but not this year. Last week's storm caused several mayors to get together and ask residents to go out trick-or-treating this Wednesday instead.

It's not every day the students get a high five from their Mayor. Or get to see their Mayor dressed up as a pirate, Popeye, or Prince Charming.

New Haven's John DeStefano, East Haven's Joe Maturo, and West Haven's John Picard all came in costume to the John C. Daniels School to talk to kindergarteners and first graders about going out for Halloween this Wednesday because of last week's storm.

"We didn't want anybody to get hurt," said Mayo Picard. "There was a lot of power lines down. A lot of trees down."

The question is will Wednesday be a trick or treat?

"I'm going to with all my muscles and all my spinach."

With a Nor'easter heading this way there could be more trouble brewing.

"So no thinking of postponing it again," asked News 8's Tina Detelj.

"No, this is a once in a lifetime event," said Mayor DeStefano. "Just use common sense. What we don't have is lots of wires and lots of blacked out neighborhoods and that's why I think this makes sense."

The mayors didn't just leave the kids with some good advice, they also left them with cinch sacks for their candy. The orange color of the sacks should also keep them safe.

The three mayors and two others got together to make sure Halloween happens even if it's a week later.

"Branford will also be celebrating their Halloween, and Milford too," said Mayor Maturo, "along with us on Wednesday."

Again if the weather Wednesday night is a fright you may want to keep the little ghosts and goblins inside.
