MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A fire at a home in Meriden had firefighters and neighbors rushing into a burning to save the people trapped inside.
The fire happened on Saturday shortly after 5 p.m. on Corrigan Avenue. The fire began on the 2nd floor.
Neighbors said an elderly man and his daughter were in the home.
When Children nearby saw the smoke, they ran and told Greg Chester. Greg didn't hesitate to run into the home, earning the respect of local firefighters.
"Just the fact there's a 92-year-old-man unconscious upstairs in a burning house, I wanted to see if there's anything I could possibly do," said Chester, a neighbor. "I helped drag a lady down the stairs. You couldn't even see the stairs at that point."
The Meriden Fire Chief, James Trainor, was impressed with Chester's actions.
"For people that do that, it's extraordinary and I have a lot of respect for them, to try and do that," Trainor said.
EMT's quickly arrived to help the victims.
The fire fighters were able to get the elderly man out. He was rushed to the hospital with smoke inhalation and burns. He later died of his injuries.
