NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP/WTNH) — Yale celebrated its 311th commencement.
The school was scheduled to confer degrees on more than 1,200 students in the ceremonies on Monday morning.
Although the biggest cheers came from members of the Yale graduating class of 2012, there was no shortage of excitement from store owners on Chapel Street, enjoying the annual business boost that comes with Yale's commencement.
"It's bitter sweet because we're losing some of our favorite people," said Claire Criscuolo, Claire's Corner Copia, "but some of the freshmen and sophomores yesterday reminded me that they're still here."
Also present Monday, were thousands of proud family members of the graduates.
Before and after the festivities many were strolling and window shopping at downtown stores like Tracey B's.
"There's always lots of people on the streets when things are happening at Yale, we keep our doors open, we're nice and welcoming to people strolling in," said Tracy Bonoscini, Tracy B. "It's nice, when people travel they like to shop more often than not, so it's always good for us."
Life will go on for the Yalies following the euphoria of graduation day.
It will also go on at iconic New Haven eateries like Claire's Corner Copia, where the day of celebration is always a special time of the year.
"We're just thrilled, its the best time of the year," said Criscuolo, "it's what you work four years for, parents are proud, families are proud and everyone is happy."
During Monday's ceremonies, students heard from journalist Barbara Walters, who talked about finding her bliss and learning from failure.
Several students also received honors, including Brett Smith, a former football player who was seriously injured in a car accident on Interstate 95 as a freshman in 2003. Four other Yale athletes were killed in that crash.
Smith, who suffered a brain injury and was in a coma after the accident, defied doctors' predictions and has earned a bachelor's degree in history.
