New Haven groups looking to reduce violence

New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - Three civic groups in New Haven are coming together, pooling their resources with the common goal of reducing violence.

They plan to make a difference by working side by side with the police to end what they call a culture of violence.

"Starting today we're making a change block by block, identifying each household," said Stacey Spell, West River Neighborhood Services Association, "children's needs addressing the root cause of what effects our community."

Like many in the neighborhood the violence has touched Spell personally: his cousin was killed in a random shooting a decade ago.

Experiences like that helped bring the Reclaim our Community Coalition, the West River Neighborhood Services Coalition and the Youth Empowerment Squad together last fall.

"Until we address the root causes it's like putting a band aid on a cancer," Spell said.

The new initiatives include "Shun the Gun," which will teach young people that using weapons is not the way to settle disputes.

"If you get in it with someone you can apologize," said Jamila Marr, Youth Empowerment Squad, "if you kill someone you can never take it back. We need to re-establish that value of life and respect."

A second initiative, the so-called "No Entry" program will focus on building up the self esteem of neighborhood children.

"Activities that will give them tips to understand who they are," said Jerry Poole, West River resident, "they're potential, develop positive attitudes and good character."

The coalition of groups admits that changing attitudes is a long-term proposition, but they're all in the neighborhood and are willing to take a strong stand.
