New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - The Special Olympics Connecticut summer games gets started tomorrow, but first the Olympic torch must make its way through the state.
It is Day 2 of the torch run with the torch going through Wallingford and North Branford.
"Officers will run in their town and then at the town line, they'll take the torch and they'll hand it off to the next town," said Sgt. Don Crabtree, Wethersfield Police Department.
The police officers ran alongside the Special Olympic athletes to raise money and awareness.
"Their dedication is just amazing, they would run through anything for our athletes, rain, fire, hurricanes and they do," said Lisa Carlone, Special Olympics.
It helps that they have the support of those passing by.
"We have a lot of people who will honk their horns, they'll get out of their cars and support us and support the officers and the athletes and cheer us on and that's what they're looking for is to raise the awareness," said Sgt. Crabtree.
Fifteen hundred local police officers, state troopers and even Department of Corrections officers will participate in the three day event. They each run about five to 8 miles, ending at the site of the games, Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
The games run June 11-13th.
