New Haven superintendent says athletes favored

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — New Haven's school superintendent says an eight-month investigation has found isolated grade tampering and preferential treatment of student athletes at James Hillhouse High School.

The New Haven Register reports (http://bit.ly/NXFNnd) a school district statement Monday night said steps would be taken to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Superintendent Reginald Mayo said he isn't recommending any firings, but may recommend suspensions and other discipline. He said he'll meet with those involved and a union representative.

The incidents cited included preferential summer school treatment for two students, and allowing two student athletes to miss more school than required for promotion. The district statement said one student's failing algebra grade was erased, apparently in an attempt to meet NCAA eligibility.

Mayo said none of the allegations involved tampering with state standardized tests.

The investigation by an attorney began in December.
