NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- New Haven's oldest City Hall employee passed away Wednesday.

David Greenberg died at 92.

Upon hearing of his death Mayor John DeStefano said, "from living most of his life in Westville, to graduating from the Edgewood and Hillhouse High School, to serving as an attorney for the City, David Greenberg was a New Havener through and through. He not only served the City with distinction, but also brought an infectious optimism to anything and everything he did. He will be missed."

Greenberg was a 1949 graduate of UConn's Law School and practiced law for many years and served as senior partner at the law firm Greenberg, Hurwitz, and Licari. He also served as a member of the City's Board of Aldermen from 1965 to 1969.

After a long, distinguished career Greenberg joined the Corporation Counsel's Office in 1994 as Senior Counsel.

At the Corporation Counsel's Office, Greenberg worked with a variety of city departments, including the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Elderly Services. Greenberg also served as counsel to the City's Board of Ethics.

City Corporation Counsel Victor A. Bolden described Greenberg as "a lawyer's lawyer and the consummate gentleman, who brought a highly analytical mind, a clear and effective writing style and an uncommon human decency to the practice of law."

City Board of Ethics member Shepard Parsons remembered Greenberg as someone who "loved the law, the life of the mind and his family in reverse order."

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, four children, Beth, Joshua, Reesa, and Nancy and seven grandchildren.
