Waterbury (AP) - A 21-year veteran of the Waterbury police department has been named as the city's new police chief.

Mayor Michael Jarjura announced Tuesday that he has chosen Michael Gugliotti as Waterbury's 20th police chief. A swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for next week.

The 44-year-old Gugliotti has been acting chief since Neil O'Leary retired from the job in June. He beat 15 other applicants, including three other city police officials who made the final four.

Jarjura says Gugliotti got the highest overall score on an oral exam administered last week by the police chiefs of Hartford, Simsbury and Stamford.

Gugliotti was hired by the department as a patrol officer in 1988 when he was 22. He was promoted through the ranks and named deputy chief in 2007.
