Milford (WTNH) - A special event honored a fallen Connecticut Marine in Milford.
Monroe native Kevin Dempsey died in Iraq on Nov. 13, 2004.
He was known to his friends as Jack.
Saturday, dozens packed into Crossfit Milford for a memorial workout to raise money for Animal Haven in North Haven, a cause that was close to the Marine.
"Jack was one of my best friends. It was weird because I actually met him at the gym and he had just moved up from Monroe to New Canaan. Didn't know a lot of people, had a crazy love for animals. So we figured the best thing to do was get an animal shelter in here and raise money for them," Dave Duprey, of West Haven, said.
"It's team based, to follow kind of the military aspect of it," Jason Leydon, the owner of Crossfit Milford, said. "You have to work together to get it done. It'll be pretty tough, so hopefully they'll experience some type of good pain to go along with the cause for the workout."
The event raised $700 for the private, no-kill animal shelter.
