East Haven (WTNH) - Friday night means football for high schools around the state, but not for some players at East Haven High.

They, along with student athletes from other sports teams have been benched because of alcohol-related issues.

And this is not the first time this fall the school has dealt with such issues.

A winless varsity football team has hopes of its first victory. But it seems headlines continue to be made from activities off the field by East Haven athletes.

Two football players were suspended, the same two football players that were suspended a time before. In addition, five girls soccer players, were also suspended from the team.

The suspension comes from the players violating the school's policy on alcohol. But parents and faculty tire of such talk, saying the true essence of the student body is being missed by the media.

For example, the band. The group was recently invited to a national competition next year in Washington, DC.

Ed Mahon is a band parent.

"They work their cans of doing this, they are out there raising money and stuff like that," Mahon said.

Four football players and two cheerleaders were reinstated in September after a similar incident. Athletic Director Mike Marone calls this latest round of suspensions disappointing.

But many parents here feel there are better stories to tell here of good kids doing good things and that good news is often left in the shadows, especially at a school that has had too much negative press as of late.
