DeStefano 'not surprised' by ruling

New Haven (WTNH) - New Haven Mayor John DeStefano says he is 'not surprised' by today's Supreme Court ruling that city firefighters, known as the New Haven 20, were unfairly denied promotions because of their race.

Back in 2003, promotional exams were given, but only white firefighters passed the test. Citing previous litigation and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the city decided not to grant any promotions.

The New Haven 20's case went all the way to the United States Supreme Court who ruled 5-4 in favor of the white firefighters.

Mayor DeStefano, quoting Justice Souter's written opinion on the case, said the city of New Haven was 'damned if you do, damned if you don't.'

The New Haven 20 say they feel 'vindicated' by the ruling.
