NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- The tragedy at Sandy Hook has people everywhere wondering what can they do to make a difference. That's why the folks at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital are teaming up with the New Haven Police Department to help get guns off the street.

On December 22nd and December 29th, the New Haven Police Department is asking the public to turn in their guns.

"What people want to see is action," said Lt. David Hartman, New Haven PD. "Although we can't speak for the nation, uh, we can't act for the nation, we can certainly act for our community. And this is action."

People turning in their guns will receive a $50 American Express gift card. Assault weapons are worth $100.

Firearms must be delivered unloaded. They must be in clear plastic bags and put in another container.
Any ammunition should be in a separate bag. And firearms must be in working condition.

"They're stolen in burglaries, they're brought to New Haven, exchanged for drugs, and end up on the streets," said Asst. Chief Achilles Generoso. "Any gun that we take off the street is gonna, is gonna help reduce violence."

"We don't ask questions as to where that gun came from," Hartman said. "We're very happy to have it off the street."

"We need to stop this. We need to put an end to this gun violence," Asst. Chief Generoso said. "We're losing too many of our children to gun violence."

Police say a successful buyback really depends on word of mouth. That's why they ask that you share this news with everyone. The buyback dates are December 22nd and 29th, at the Police Training Academy 710 Sherman Park.
