(WTNH) -- The parent company of the New Haven Register announced Wednesday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and "will seek to implement a prompt sale."

Digital First Media operates the Journal Register Company and MediaNews Group. Company officials hope to have a sale done in about 90 days.

"After much consideration, the Board of Directors concluded a Chapter 11 filing was the best course of action for Journal Register Company," Digital First Media Chief Executive Officer John Paton said in a statement. "As difficult as they are, the steps we announced today are steps that will ensure the Company's future."

In the past year the New Haven Register outsourced its printing to the Hartford Courant, laid off staff, and put its well-known building in the Long Wharf section of New Haven up for sale.

Journal Register also operates the Torrington Register Citizen, Middletown Press, and Connecticut Magazine.
