Parents mull dress code proposal

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- East Haven is mulling a dress code for kindergarten through eighth grades what would only allow a limited and modest array of styles and colors.

"It'd be kind of fine," said second grader Kyle Miller.  

"You'd be surprised how these younger children also know the difference between Abercrombie or a Wal-Mart piece of clothing," said Judy Kamienski.

"I definitely agree with the dress code because it puts a lot less stress on kids, not getting made fun of for clothing, and also it teaches them to be a little more classy and appropriate when they're out in a public setting," said East Haven High School alumna Brittany Douglas.

It's tough to argue when self-esteem hangs in the balance.

"I think peer pressure stems from kids going to school, that can't afford Nike sneakers, $150 sneakers, and whatever else, $50-dollar jeans and whatever, and I think bullying starts there," said Lori Musco.

Parents did express one concern.

"Just going shopping, spending more money that we already don't have now, said parent Peter Girasuolo. "But if they all have the same stuff on it might be less of a distraction and they can focus more on the curriculum."

"It's cheaper for parents to go out and buy a couple pairs of khaki pants for their kids, than to go buy those $50 jeans," Musco agreed.

A public forum is set for 6:00 p.m. Thursday night at East Haven High School. Though a decision might not be imminent, school officials hope to reach one soon so that parents can be prepared for the fall.
