WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) --Plans to makeover the Waterbury Green are being discussed.

The Waterbury Green is currently known as a bus stop and hang out for the homeless, but plans to add a stage and fountains are a possibility.

Folks who live in the area agree that the Waterbury Green is in need of a makeover.

"Its bad you got drug addicts hanging out here, people here doing what they do ya know," said Sam Rivera of Waterbury.

Officers on foot walk around and patrol the green. Now there are efforts to re-design the downtown space, and make it a destination place.

Waterbury is using grant money to have the plans drafted. Shown in the plans is an amphitheater, canopies for bus riders, and a new fountain.

Right now the plans are just ideas, but the Mayor of Waterbury is weighing out the cost.

"Oh it will cost its no question we do it all at one time, or piece meal it, but it will probably be in the neighborhood of several million dollars by the time its finished, start to finish," said Mayor Neil O'Leary.

Folks are spilt in regards to whether or not the grant money is being well spent.

"I would love to see an amphitheater, and a little more color maybe," said Garnet Lopez of Waterbury.

"How they can afford to fix up the green when they are about a billion dollars in the hole," said a Waterbury resident.

The city is hosting an open forum on May 9, at the Waterbury City Hall. Residents will be able to have a say about what is put on the Waterbury Green.
