Possible fine for running red lights

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) - Most drivers know the rules when it comes to traffic lights, but those rules are not always followed and now it may cost you.

"Red light means stop. Green light means go. Yellow light means slow down," says James Lewis of New Haven.

In some cases people speed up when they see yellow and that will cost them.

"Nah, it's too much government. I mean, if they don't catch you, it didn't really happen," says Joshua Zike of New Haven.

A bill that would allow cities with populations over 60 thousand to install cameras that record red light violations has won approval from two legislative committees. The legislature could vote on the issue before the end of the legislative session Jun. 8.

"That sucks, It's safer though, you can see who's speeding or whatever. Safety first," says Jeff Smith of New Haven.

"It seems like a little invasion of privacy, but I don't run red lights, I'm comfortable with it," says Greg Hyman of New Haven.

The big push for this comes from a February study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety . The report states cities with camera enforcement reduced the rate of fatal red light running crashes by 24 percent. Here in Connecticut, the fine would be $124, but remember, it still needs the green light from the House, Senate, and the Governor's office before your car makes it on a not so candid camera.
