New Haven (WTNH) - A group of New Haven firefighters get the pomp and circumstance they've been fighting for for years when they formally receive their promotions.
They took a solemn vow, a pledge to protect and serve.
"It's great for morale, it's great for the general operations of the department, it's great for the rank and file of the department. It's a very good day for the department," said Fire Chief Michael Grant.
It all began back in 2003 when the city of New Haven refused to certify the results of a promotions exam because not enough minorities would have advanced. The New Haven 20 fought back with Frank Ricci leading the charge.
"The important thing to remember is that 14 plaintiffs will be getting their badge today but it took 20 plaintiffs to make history," Ricci said.
The Supreme Court overturned the city's decision.
"It was a tremendous sacrifice for all of our families but we're real proud to be here today," Ricci said.
A new department with a new determination is finally moving forward.
"We look forward to serving the citizens of New Haven," Ricci said.
Ten other firefighters who did not join the lawsuit were also promoted today.
