NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) - The principal of Clinton Avenue School is New Haven was placed on paid administrative leave after witnessing students challenging each other to swallow spoonfuls of cinnamon.

The cinnamon swallowing challenge made popular by postings on YouTube has some dangerous side effects, and principals across the city are being notified.

Swallowing the spoonful of cinnamon can result in burning sensations and coughing fits. The Clinton Avenue School principal saw the challenge taking place, but did nothing to stop it.

"When they come to school, they say, they say have you heard of the cinnamon challenge," said 8th grader, Keyante Reeves.

"Its like when you tell them not to do it, they just want to do it more," said Christina Lan.

A letter has been mailed to parents warning them of the dangers of the challenge which other then coughing includes choking, severe chest pain and breathing difficulties, especially for those with asthma.

Marguita Landelius of New Haven said she will be speaking to her children about the dangers that come along with trying to swallow a teaspoon of cinnamon.

"I will, but I think they are smart enough not to do it because if they do, they will have to answer to me," said Landelius.

Although it may seem like an attention getter, some students like Reeves said they will not be trying it.
