UPDATE: Amtrak service between New York and Boston Acela Express and Northeast Regional Service resumed Sunday afternoon at 1:45 PM.
The first northbound departure from Penn Station in New York will be Train 194 at 5:00 PM.
The first southbound departure from Boston South Station will be Train 2259 at 4:10 PM.
Passengers should expect residual delays through the New Haven area, as a result of the derailment. Those who have paid but choose not to travel, can receive a refund or voucher for future travel.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)-- This was all it took to create chaos for travelers. Providence and Worcester freight train derailed in New Haven, which blocked the tracks.
As a result, Amtrak for a time, suspended passenger service between New York and Boston.
This is not good news for Grandma Jean, who arrived at the New London station with a gift for her grandson.
"I was supposed to take the train, it was the I-95 8:18, but they told there has been a derailment," said Jean Jepsen, New London.
In New Haven, we found a mom who drove from Providence Rhode Island to Union Station, so her daughter could make it back to Manhattan.
The Providence and Worcester freight car is no longer on the track, now Amtrak detoured all trains through Springfield, Massachusetts, but some passengers are not wanting to wait and are finding their own way to go.
The Greyhound bus terminal is right over here, and they open at 9:30 and I can get a bus at 10:30, pay for my ticket, then be on my way," said Jepsen.
You see Grandma Jean wants to deliver this gift in person.
"It's a birthday party for my grandson, so I have to be there," said Jepsen.
Amtrak is offering refunds for passengers choosing to take another mode of transportation.
