ANSONIA, Conn. (WTNH) -- Two dogs are dead following a deadly attack in Ansonia.

Police say on Saturday a couple was walking their dog, a small Yorkshire Terrier, along High Street when a pit bull left the house at 96 High Street. The pit bull is said to have smashed into the home's front gate, made it to the sidewalk, and then attacked the small dog.

Neighbors tried to free the dog, but the pit bull wouldn't let go and killed the Yorkshire Terrier.

When police arrived, the neighbors were still trying to free the small dog. An officer tasered the pit bull, who ran away and then charged at the officer. That's when the officer pulled out his gun and shot the dog.

The dog died on the way to a local veterinary hospital.

The incident is under investigation as police talk to the owners of the pit bull.
