NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- The dream of owning a home has come true for two families thanks to Habitat for Humanity and Yale New Haven Hospital.
The Valez family helped bring back the community that they love by being a part of the team that built one of the homes.
"It's a dream come true," said Maria Valez. "I still cannot believe it, but here we are in our own house."
Times have been tough for the family as Maria's husband is disabled and they have two children to support.
Before Habitat for Humanity came along, they could only afford a two-bedroom apartment.
With the two new homes built on Vernon Street, the 3rd ward has now built 15 area homes.
"It's a tough street and they made the commitment to help us rebuild Vernon Street," said Jacqueline James, Alderwoman.
Yale New Haven Hospital announced that they bought a house that borders the two new homes. They hope to tear it down and start rebuilding another new home in September.
