NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Several Walk to End Alzheimer's events took place across Connecticut on Sunday, one of which was at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven.

$185,000 has been raised in just one day at the New Haven Walk to End Alzheimer's event. While it is certainly a cause, it's one that anyone can get behind.

They walk for those they have lost and those they are losing, to Alzheirmer's.

"My mom is very young and these are her grandchildren, so to have such little grandchildren and to not be able to enjoy them, it's sad," Cindy Lucas of Milford explained.

Putting one foot in front of the other isn't the hard part, it's the caring, the everyday coping with a disease robbing so many of their memories and their ability to connect.

"Taking everyday one day at a time, but there are alot of resources out there for people and hopefully some of this money will help to end this terrible disease," Lucas said.

The money raised goes to funding research to help find a cure and also to support programs for caregivers, the folks on the frontlines.

They have advice for those of us who may someday be walking down the same road.

"Support groups are there for them we have 150 support groups in this state," said John Proto, Leader of a Support Group. "We have a 24-hour, seven day a week Alzheimer's Association caregiver hotline."

It's proof that no one has to walk this road alone.

The toll-free hotline to call anytime, day or night, is 1.800.272.3900
