Waterbury cancels July 4 fireworks to save money

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) — Waterbury canceled this year's July 4 fireworks display to save money and police cruisers surrounded Municipal Stadium to deliver the news.

The Republican American reported  that police turned away dozens of people from the stadium, which is the primary viewing area. Some spectators brought their families in minivans and had their car trunks filled with beach chairs.

Waterbury's budget for fireworks had been slashed due to construction at Municipal Stadium that makes the facility partly unusable.

A manager at a Dunkin' Donuts shop on Watertown Avenue said he was planning to close early because the typical business boost vanished on Wednesday night.
