For sale: Small LI Sound island with lighthouse

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — Environmental and historic preservation groups are running out of time if they want to keep a small island in Long Island Sound from becoming private property.

The Day of New London reports that the Connecticut Fund for the Environment - Save the Sound is looking for grants, loans and donations to bid in a federal government auction of Little Gull Island, a 1-acre island between Plum and Fishers islands.

The island is among several former Coast Guard lighthouse properties being sold by the General Services Administration, the landlord for federal government property. Little Gull's granite tower lighthouse was built in 1869 and includes an automated navigation light and horn blast.

Three bids have been received, with the highest at $70,000. Bidding closes on Oct. 10.
