New London (WTNH) - Eight pit bulls will not be put to sleep after an ambitious woman fought to help save their lives.

Karen West contacted New London's newly elected mayor, Rob Pero, after the New London Police Department and the City of New London previously ordered to put them down.

The mayor stepped up to the plate and got the city manager involved. Together, they demanded that the dogs not be killed.

The dogs, full blooded Staffordshire Terriers, were seized in a New London drug raid and were supposed to be euthanized if no one came forward to adopt them.

The dogs will remain at the New London pound where they will be evaluated.
