A bumpy ride on Ledyard's worst road

LEDYARD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Folks who have been waiting since 1989 to see repairs made to a bad road, may have to wait a little while longer to see it fixed.

The road in Ledyard is riddled with potholes and cracks. Public Works officials say they want to make repairs to the road, but if they want it fixed this year they will have to dig deep into their pockets.

News 8 is told Pinelock Drive in Ledyard is rated a 23 out of 100: one of the worst in town, but it's also a small road and residents have learned to live with it.

"We're right on the corner and it's big chunks are always at the bottom of our driveway."

Susan Wood lives at the worst part of what may be considered the town's worst road.

"It's very frustrating and when I drive through it's always hang on, buckle up," Wood said.

Even her kids have noticed.

"My son is always like 'why is this road so bumpy?' And he's only three," said Wood.

It's so bumpy because of the pot holes and ruts that have formed over the years. The town has made repairs, but it needs to be resurfaced.

"In the past summer they've patched it up, but with all the snow plows coming down here and the different cars it just kicks it all up," Wood said.

The town knows the road needs to be fixed, it's just whether or not it has the money to do so.

The cost to resurface the road could be as much as $140,000, but the money may go to bigger, more traveled roads first. Pinelock is a dead end and is just half a mile long. The town council is expected to decide whether or not to make enough money available to smooth out this ride this year.

"I can understand why a road isn't a priority, there's not a lot of people," Wood said, "but it would still be nice to have a decent road to drive on."

One man tells News 8 he doesn't mind the bumpy ride, it keeps his taxes low.
