Body found at Waterfront Park

NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police are investigating after a body was found in Waterfront Park in New London.

The woman's body was found under a pier and she was pronounced dead on the scene.

There's not word yet on the official cause of death, but police say it does not appear to be suspicious.

The body was transported to the state Medical Examiner's office to be examined and formally identified.

Police say they are looking into the woman's activities prior to the time of her death.

The Executive Director of New London Homeless Hospitality Center says the woman was on the waiting list for the shelter, which was at full capacity. According to the shelter, the Massachusetts woman, whose name was not released, was in New London for a treatment program.

After she was turned away from the shelter, she was offered a bus ticket, which she is said to have declined.
