BOZRAH, Conn. (AP) - A Bozrah woman says she is not guilty of mistreating animals.

Carol Mayefsky was in court on Monday to face 14 counts of an animal cruelty after authorities say they seized five birds, a dog and seven cats from her home after an investigation lasting several months.

She was arrested after repeated efforts by animal control officers to get her to clean up her property that authorities say was strewn with tons of trash, animal waste and infested with fleas.

The animals were placed in protective custody.

The town even paid to have about three tons of trash hauled away.

The 53-year-old Mayefsky says she's been working with authorities to clean up her property but it's an old farmhouse.
